Overview

The 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions identified by Margaret S. Smith and Mary K. Stein provide a framework to plan and facilitate math learning based on student thinking. Before diving into the 5 Practices, it is essential to lay a foundation with clear mathematical goals and selection of a rich mathematical task. This first workshop of the series digs into the lesson planning that makes the 5 Practices possible and effective.
