Overview

This 1-day workshop is designed for teachers, coaches, school leaders, and instructional staff who provide foundational literacy instruction to students in grades K-8. The workshop supports teachers in K-3 with developing a research-based foundational literacy program and adjusts for teachers in grades 4-8 to focus on expansion of foundational literacy needs (i.e. advanced word study, vocabulary development) as well as filling instructional gaps from K-2 skills. Participants explore science of reading based instructional components of foundational literacy in the student-centered classroom and reflect upon their current practices in order to determine actionable next steps for accelerating student learning in reading, writing, thinking, and speaking.

Learning Experience

  • Define student-centered literacy, science of reading, and foundational literacy.
  • Explore the look-fors of a student-centered literacy classroom and the instructional components of foundational literacy determined by the science of reading and literacy.
  • Build a mind map to organize and synthesize their new learning and develop a plan of action for implementation.
