Balancing Synchronous and Asynchronous Instruction

Focus Area: Blended Learning

Teachers

Phase: Targeted Support

Overview

To implement flexible instructional models, we must think about time differently. For example, educators may opt to use asynchronous learning time to build student autonomy and synchronous time for group work, decide to set aside days for SEL, allow students to follow learning “pathways” at their own pace, or many other options. In coaching or in a Virtual Workshop, participants will:

  • Define synchronous and asynchronous learning in a blended learning context
  • Explore examples of “learning cadence” options, like playlists, calendaring, etc
  • Build and get peer feedback on their plan for using time effectively in flexible learning settings

Audience

This workshop is intended to support teachers in implementing blended learning by thinking about how to be strategic in how to effectively use time in their in-person classrooms. Leaders and coaches could also benefit from this session to gain ideas on how to best support their teachers in implementation.

Specifications

  • 2 hours
  • Participants will need a computer with a camera, microphone and Internet access

Outcomes

I can think critically about learning cadence by balancing synchronous and asynchronous instruction in order to create engagement, balance, and consistency in student learning experiences.

Learning Experience

Define

  • Define the purposes and benefits of synchronous and asynchronous learning in academic, cultural, and assessment aspects of the in-person classroom
  • Understand how to build systems of learning cadence in a blended learning context by integrating technology to support student learning by looking at real-life teacher scenarios
  • Explore the options for flexibility within learning cadence to provide support for all learners

Explore

  • Explore examples of “learning cadence” supports and strategies, such as creating playlists, chunking learning tasks, and building calendars by engaging in a choice board
  • Reflect on how establishing routines and experimenting with various strategies and ideas can provide guidance on how to support all learners within blended learning spaces

Build

  • Build a plan for one learning cadence structure that fits their context and needs using a planning template
  • Create a shared community space for learning cadence ideas and get feedback on their plans by using a protocol
