Overview

When designing instruction, we must consider how all learners will access meaningful and challenging learning experiences that meet their needs. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) helps educators design learning experiences with opportunities, scaffolds, and supports so that each student can succeed.

Audience

This session is designed for teachers, coaches, and leaders who want to build understanding around how designing engaging and rigorous learning experiences that meet the needs of all learners can accelerate learning. This session is not intended to be an introduction to the Universal Design for Learning principles. This workshop is targeted to support educators to launch into the school year with the ability to articulate the shifts in practice needed to address academic gaps and unfinished learning that occurred during COVID.

Define

• Define how designing learning with a UDL lens leads to greater student achievement
• Take a deep dive into the components of UDL: engagement, representation, action and expression

Explore

• Explore teacher lesson plan examples using UDL learning tasks, scaffolds, and supports
• Brainstorm how to build UDL components into learning opportunities for different grade levels and content areas in collaborative groups

Build

• Create a learning task that is aligned to UDL principles
• Evaluate their plan using a UDL checklist
