Overview
In order to create IEPs that truly reflect student strengths and needs, educators and leaders must develop systems through which students are able to advocate for themselves. Involving students in their own IEPs and making them student-centered is one way of teaching and encouraging this self-advocacy. To help case managers build understanding of student-centered IEPs, in this virtual workshop, learners will:
- Examine the importance of student-centered IEPs and consider how making IEPs more student-centered will impact the work they do with students.
- Engage in a reflection activity to consider their past experiences with IEPs, then use a choice matrix to learn more about student-centered IEPs.
- Split into breakout rooms by grade-band and engage in a jigsaw activity to explore a variety of strategies and resources for making IEPs more student-centered.
- Collaborate in grade-band groups to determine the next steps for making their IEPs more student-centered with the support of a planning template. In groups, learners will discuss how to check their next steps for success and how to iterate on their plans in the future.
