In this 2 hour virtual workshop, a BetterLesson coach will guide your learning community in understanding Restorative Justice. Participants will start by defining what Restorative Justice is and is not, then explore resources to develop practices that will create school communities that respond less punitively and with greater empathy, before ending with a self-evaluation of the processes a participants’ school uses to determine what is restorative and what can improve.
In this hands-on, collaborative experience, participants will develop their awareness and understanding of Restorative Justice in order to begin developing learning communities aligned to restorative justice principles.
This product is designed for teachers that are looking for a new or alternative approach to managing student behavior, rebuilding and restoring classroom community culture, or focusing on building relationships rather than administering punishments to create equitable and inclusive classroom environments.

Define
First, participants unpack what Restorative Justice means, how it’s beneficial, and key points about Restorative Justice are synthesized.
Explore
Next, participants understand the importance of relationships and community for restorative justice work before exploring common restorative practices.
Build
Lastly, participants work in groups to determine responses to scenarios and then evaluate the processes their school has to determine what is restorative and what can improve. A brief strategy exploration concludes this section followed by a reflection to end this session.
