Reimagining Classroom Culture to Promote Inclusion

Overview

This 2-hour virtual learning workshop is designed to help educators investigate their classroom and reimagine a culture where students are the center of the learning experience. Instead of adhering to normalized practices, students will challenge their ideas and recreate a classroom experience where diverse narratives, perspectives, and ideals are magnified, amplified, and driven throughout their learning. Educators in this session will become familiar with The Clover Model, a framework for understanding the developmental needs of students of all ages, as well as the principles of culturally responsive teaching and learning. Understanding these concepts will support educators in narrowing their exploration of strategies that way they leave this session with a plan of implementation.

Audience

This product is designed for classroom teachers that are working to develop a classroom culture that recognizes, acknowledges, and honors the diversity in the room in order to amplify learning experiences for all students. For educators that have homogeneous classrooms, this is a great opportunity to reimagine a classroom culture that’s student-centered, focused, and led while learning how to include narratives that are often misrepresented or omitted from dominant culture.

Learning Experience

Define

Participants will start by defining what culture means to them, then in the classroom, before closing this section by defining what culturally responsive teaching and learning is from their experience and by definition.

Explore

In this section participants will explore how The Clover Model and 7 Principles of Culturally Responsive Teaching are connected. Next, participants will explore a strategy that’s related to either an element or a principle and create a plan of implementation.

Build

To close, participants will work in groups first to practice and then to share their implementation plans and receive feedback from their colleagues. Participants will engage in an interactive gallery walk to conclude this session.
