Launching the EL Education K-8 Modules

Overview

After building the foundation of how and why the EL Curriculum was developed during the Launch Workshop, educators need time to build their understanding of the modules component. During the 6-hour workshop, educators will define how modules are structured and how this supports students’ literacy development. Educators will also work to understand the specific components of each lesson and how they build to ensure success over time. By experiencing different components of the curriculum, educators will develop and internalize how lessons are structured and will have time to plan for intentional instruction.

Audience

Classroom teachers and leaders who are new to implementing the EL Education Curriculum. 

Specifications

• 6 hours, in-person
• Participants will need a computer with Internet access, headphones, as well as access to their curriculum materials (including logins to curriculum platforms)

Learning Experience

This learning experience should follow an EL Education Launch Workshop if participants have no prior experience with the EL Curriculum. This session is focused on planning and exploring Module 1 and the lesson components. Participants should have a solid understanding of the design and philosophy of the EL Curriculum in order to most effectively engage in the planning process.

Define

• Review structure of module and how it relates to the entire curriculum

Explore

• Review and identify the topics and skills addressed and assessed in Module 1.
• Trace the progression of skills within a unit from Module 1
• Watch a video of a 4th grade lesson
• Use a guided template to plan a lesson with their grade-level teams
• Experience a Close Reading lesson as students
• Explore lesson components in a station rotation model

Build

• Reflect as a group on natural next steps based on the day’s learning and identified implications on the classroom.
• Begin working on those next steps, choosing how they will spend their time.
• Individually reflect on instructional shifts that they will engage in
